How we score a Namakarana muhurat

Every date is scored 0 to 100 on the classical Namakarana factors:

  • Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi of the bright half are favored; Purnima and Amavasya are excluded
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favored
  • Nakshatra: the gentle, swift set is favored: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha and Revati
  • Lagna window: the best intra-day window with a strong, benefic lagna
  • Exclusions: Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and eclipse days are excluded outright

Dates we exclude, and why

These classical prohibitions remove a date from the Namakarana list entirely:

  • Rikta tithis: Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi of either paksha are considered hollow for the naming rite
  • Purnima and Amavasya: both the full-moon and new-moon days are excluded per B. V. Raman, Muhurtha Ch. VIII
  • Eclipse days: no new beginnings on solar or lunar eclipse days

No weekday is hard-excluded for Namakarana here; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday earn the weekday points.

Cross-check: drikpanchang.com's Namkaran date page is no longer published, so we cross-checked against mpanchang.com's Namkaran list: their Nov 11 (Anuradha), Nov 22 (Ashwini) and Nov 25 (Rohini) entries match our engine's nakshatra picks for those dates. Naming carries the gentlest rule set of the five: no weekday is hard-barred and Jwalamukhi is not applied, so our list runs longer than stricter traditions allow.
