How we score a Mundan muhurat
Every date is scored 0 to 100 on the classical Mundan factors:
- Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi are favored in BOTH pakshas; Purnima and Amavasya are excluded
- Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favored
- Nakshatra: the Chara, Mridu-Maitra and Kshipra groups plus Jyeshtha are favored: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati
- Season: the Uttarayana solar months (Sun in Makara through Mithuna) are classically preferred; other months only warn, never exclude
- Lagna window: the best intra-day window with a strong, benefic lagna
- Exclusions: Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Jwalamukhi Yoga days and eclipse days are excluded outright
Dates we exclude, and why
These classical prohibitions remove a date from the Mundan list entirely:
- Rikta tithis: Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi of either paksha are considered hollow for the tonsure rite
- Purnima and Amavasya: both the full-moon and new-moon days are excluded
- Jwalamukhi Yoga: the fierce tithi-nakshatra combinations are barred
- Eclipse days: no new beginnings on solar or lunar eclipse days
Two family customs vary and are left to your tradition: Friday is avoided for a girl child mundan in some families, and whether the birth month or birth nakshatra is good or bad for mundan is disputed between scholars. This engine takes no position on either.
