Upagrahas: the Shadow Planets

Gulika in Vedic Astrology

Gulika is the most feared of the upagrahas, the shadow planets of Vedic astrology. Called the son of Saturn, it has no physical body, yet classical texts give it a fixed place in the kundali and read its house position for health, longevity and hidden troubles. Here is what it is, how it is calculated, and what it means in every house.

What is Gulika?

Gulika is an upagraha, a shadow planet. Unlike the Sun or Mars, it has no physical mass and cannot be seen in the sky. It is a sensitive mathematical point, computed from the time of birth, and treated like a planet for prediction.

Tradition calls Gulika the son of Saturn (Shani putra). It carries Saturn's heaviest qualities: delay, obstruction, disease and sorrow. Among all the upagrahas, Gulika is considered the most malefic, and in South India, especially Kerala, it is printed in every horoscope and watched closely.

Gulika does not decide a chart on its own. Classical astrologers use it as a fine-tuning instrument: it spoils the significations of the house it occupies and sharpens judgments about health, longevity and hidden enemies.

Gulika vs Mandi: are they the same?

This is the most asked question about Gulika, and the honest answer is: it depends on the tradition.

  • South Indian and Kerala tradition uses the two names for the same point. A horoscope from Kerala will show one position labelled Gulika or Mandi, computed from Saturn's portion of the day.
  • Parashara's classical scheme treats them as two separate computations. Gulika is found by the eight-part division of the day described below, while Mandi is found from fixed ghati tables given in texts like the Phaladeepika and Uttara Kalamrita.

Both represent the same idea: the inauspicious portion of the day ruled by Saturn. Unless you follow one school strictly, reading them as one point is the common practice.

How Gulika is calculated

The classical method comes from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It works in three steps:

  1. Divide the day into 8 equal parts, from sunrise to sunset.
  2. Assign each part a planet, counting in weekday order starting from the weekday lord. On a Sunday the order is Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the 8th part has no lord.
  3. Saturn's part is Gulika's. The sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon at the start of Saturn's part is Gulika's longitude in the kundali.

For a night birth, divide the night (sunset to sunrise) into 8 parts and count from the 5th planet from the weekday lord instead.

The same eight-part scheme also yields four more shadow points, one per planet portion: Kala from the Sun's part, Mrityu from Mars's part, Ardhaprahara from Mercury's part and Yamaghantaka from Jupiter's part. Together with Gulika these are the five kalavelas.

A popular shortcut: many almanacs fix Gulika (Mandi) at set ghatis after sunrise or sunset instead of dividing the day. Day: Sunday 26, Monday 22, Tuesday 18, Wednesday 14, Thursday 10, Friday 6, Saturday 2 ghatis after sunrise. Night: Sunday 10, Monday 6, Tuesday 2, Wednesday 26, Thursday 22, Friday 18, Saturday 14 ghatis after sunset. One ghati is 24 minutes. This is the South Indian convention; the eight-part method above is Parashara's classical one.

What is Gulika Kalam?

Gulika Kalam is the inauspicious time segment of each day that belongs to Saturn's portion, the same segment used to place Gulika in the chart. Like Rahu Kalam, it is avoided for starting new work, journeys, purchases and auspicious ceremonies.

Its clock time shifts every day because it is a fixed portion of the daylight, not a fixed hour. On a Saturday, for example, it falls in the first eighth of the day; on a Sunday, in the seventh eighth.

Effects of Gulika in each house

Classical results, after the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Read them as tendencies that modify the house, not as fixed fate.

HouseClassical effect of Gulika
1stRecurring health troubles, restless desires and a harsh manner. The native is advised extra care of the body and eyes.
2ndHarsh or cutting speech, strained family relations and difficulty in saving wealth.
3rdFavorable. Courage, a striking personality, respect from others and honor from authorities.
4thDelicate health, little comfort at home, and a tendency to wind and bile related complaints.
5thAnxiety connected with children, unconventional or rigid views, and obstacles in higher learning.
6thFavorable. Victory over enemies and competitors, a strong body, and a warm, helpful nature.
7thFriction in marriage, suspicion toward the spouse, and a name that needs guarding in partnerships.
8thA life of repeated upheavals, chronic ailments, and a classical warning for longevity. This placement is read with the greatest care.
9thRepeated ordeals, distance from father and teachers, and unorthodox views on religion.
10thFavorable. Success, children, worldly enjoyments and a devotional bent. Career may take longer to settle.
11thFavorable. Gains, leadership among people, help from relatives and prosperity.
12thHeavy expenditure, losses through low company, and a restless, wandering mind.
The upachaya rule: Gulika gives favorable results only in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, the houses where malefics do well. Even there, the good results are lost if Gulika's sign lord or navamsha lord is debilitated or combust. Judge every placement together with the house lord, aspects and the dasha running at the time.

Gulika with each planet

When Gulika joins a planet, it damages that planet's natural significations (karakatva).

Gulika + SaturnChronic complaints of the skin and allergies; a heavy, grinding combination.
Gulika + RahuVulnerability to infections and poison-related illness.
Gulika + KetuFear, and hazards connected with fire and accidents.

Why astrologers watch Gulika

Gulika earns its feared reputation from three specialist uses:

  • Longevity (ayurdaya). Gulika's position and strength feed into classical longevity calculations, and its affliction of key houses warns of health crises.
  • Maraka periods. Planets connected with Gulika help identify maraka, the death-inflicting influences, and their dasha periods.
  • Birth-time rectification. When the recorded birth time is doubtful, Gulika's computed position is one of the checks used to settle the correct lagna.

For the everyday reader, the practical takeaway is simpler: note the house Gulika occupies, apply the upachaya rule above, and read it together with the house lord and the running dasha. Gulika alone never decides a life.

Remedy for Gulika dosha

Parashara himself gives the remedy, and it is disarmingly simple: worship Lord Shiva regularly in the evening, bow to the Sun god and Lord Vishnu in the morning, and light a ghee lamp before a Shiva temple. The logic of the tradition is direct: Shiva is the great dissolver of poison, and Gulika is Saturn's poison in the chart.

Alongside this, the usual Saturn pacification helps: honest conduct, service to the elderly and the disabled, and avoiding new beginnings in Gulika Kalam.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gulika in Vedic astrology?
Gulika is a shadow planet (upagraha): a computed point with no physical body, called the son of Saturn. It is the most malefic of the upagrahas and is read for its effect on the house it occupies, especially for health and longevity.
Is Gulika the same as Mandi?
In South Indian and Kerala tradition, yes, the two names are used for the same point. In Parashara's classical scheme they are computed differently. Both represent Saturn's inauspicious portion of the day.
How is Gulika calculated in a kundali?
The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal parts counted from the weekday lord; Saturn's part is Gulika's, and the ascendant at the start of that part is Gulika's position. At night the count starts from the 5th planet from the weekday lord.
What is Gulika Kalam? Should I avoid it?
Gulika Kalam is the day's Saturn-ruled segment, considered inauspicious for beginnings like Rahu Kalam. Tradition avoids starting new work, travel or ceremonies in it.
Is Gulika in the 7th house bad for marriage?
Classically it points to friction and suspicion in marriage, but no single placement decides a marriage. Venus, the 7th lord, Jupiter's aspect and the running dasha must agree before any conclusion.
In which houses does Gulika give good results?
Only in the upachaya houses: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. Even in the 10th it may delay career settlement, and the good results fail if Gulika's sign or navamsha lord is debilitated or combust.
What is the remedy for Gulika dosha?
Parashara prescribes evening worship of Lord Shiva, morning obeisance to the Sun god and Lord Vishnu, and lighting a ghee lamp at a Shiva temple.
Can Gulika affect longevity?
Yes, in classical use. Gulika feeds into ayurdaya (longevity) calculations and the identification of maraka periods. Its placement in the 8th house is the classic warning sign.
