Chinese Zodiac Animals: Meanings and Years

By Vedic Astrology Services·Sep 26, 2026·4 min read

While Vedic astrology reads the sky at the moment of your birth, the Chinese zodiac takes a simpler approach: your birth year decides your animal sign. Twelve animals rotate in a fixed order, Rat through Pig, and each is said to lend its character to everyone born in its year. This guide explains the twelve animals, how to find yours, and what each sign is traditionally known for.

How the twelve year cycle works

The cycle runs in this fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, then back to Rat. Each animal rules one lunar year, and the pattern repeats every twelve years, so people born twelve years apart share the same sign.

Folk legend says the order comes from a race held by the Jade Emperor: the quick witted Rat won by riding on the Ox's back and jumping ahead at the finish line. It is a charming story rather than history, but it explains why the clever Rat leads the cycle and the steady Pig brings up the rear.

Important: the Chinese year does not start on January 1. It begins on Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or early February, check the actual New Year date for your birth year: you may belong to the previous year's animal.

As of this writing we are in the Year of the Horse, which began on February 17, 2026. The Year of the Goat follows in 2027.

Your sign also has an element

Each Chinese zodiac year pairs its animal with one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. The elements rotate on their own cycle, so the full combination repeats every sixty years rather than twelve. The element is said to add a second layer to the animal's character:

Recent examples: 2024 was a Wood Dragon year, 2025 a Wood Snake year, and 2026 is a Fire Horse year. Two people who share an animal but were born twelve years apart will have different elements, which is why the tradition treats them as related but not identical signs. The twelve animals and their traits

These are the qualities folk tradition associates with each sign. Read them as cultural character sketches, not as verdicts on real people:

Compatibility, in brief

Traditional Chinese astrology pairs signs into friendly trios, for example Rat, Dragon, and Monkey are considered natural allies, while directly opposite signs in the cycle (six years apart, like Rat and Horse) are said to clash. These are folk guidelines for fun reflection. Like all zodiac compatibility systems, they describe tendencies in the tradition's telling, not rules about real relationships.
